Blogger or WordPress.com?

I’ll be teaching a class on blogging soon and I’m trying to figure out what blogging platform I should use. Of course I’m leaning more toward WordPress.com for the simple fact that I love it. Blogger is ok, but I doubt if everyone that takes the class will have a google account. Also I like WordPress.com’s themes. It’s great to not have to know web design to have a great looking blog. Just slap in your own header if needed and voila. I just want to go with something that will be easier for the library patrons to set up. If I was teaching the class to a bunch of teenagers I’d definately go with either Livejournal, Vox, or (cringe) Xanga. If anyone else knows of any great free blogging sites, please share!

  • definitely wordpress.

i used blogger.com before. along with the fact that wordpress offers more space than blogger and WP themes are better than bloggers, you also can do many more things with WP.

  • Thanks Ishti and I agree. I’ve gone down the blogger route too.

  • Hi there,
I would like to make two contributions. I have both wordpress.com free hosted blogs and self-hosted wordpress.org software blogs. As well as these, I have a tumblr blog.

    Re: wordpress.com and wordpress.org
Please teach your blogging students the differences bewteen blogs that are free hosted by wordpress.com and the free software than can be downloaded form wordpress.org .

The two run on different software and different policies apply to them. Yet, every day bloggers wander around in the wordpress.com forums without reading the sticky post at the head of the forum and when they are informed of the realities many become unpleasant. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=3700

IMHO your students need to know that free hosted wordpress.com blogs are suitable for bloggers who do not intend to monetize their blogs. There is no blogger initiated advertising allowed on these free hosted blogs. This can be confirmed by typing “adsense” into the wp.com FAQs searchbox.

    - “if making money from your blog is important to you, wordpress.com is the wrong host for you
    - wordpress.com explicitly bans “Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs”

    Re: tumblr blogs
They have many features that you should become aware of. Many bloggers use their also have tumblr blogs which they use as aggregator blogs.

Best wishes for happy blogging. :-)
